La Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Medio Humano, celebrada en Estocolmo del 5 al 16 de junio de 1972, es la primera reunión mundial que busca establecer unos criterios y principios comunes que ofrezcan a los pueblos del mundo inspiración y guía para preservar y mejorar el medio humano. Las conclusiones de esta Conferencia, posteriormente, en 1987, se recogieron en el Informe Brundtland, titulado “Nuestro Futuro Común".

The environmental impact of cities goes beyond the impact on the health and well-being residents. Cities have a strong influence on the environment at the national, regional and global levels. The urban dimension of climate change, water, energy, biodiversity, chemical, wastes, trans-boundary air, and river pollution and pollution coastal areas, is becoming more and more evident. Recognizing this, UNEP and UN-HABITAT have started an iniciative to emphasise the link of local environmental issues and global policies.

An effective environmental planning and management process will help decision makers to formulate and implement realistic and effective strategies and action plans to improve air quality. These strategies and action plans have to sistematically address the short and long-term causes of urban air pollution and help the city to achieve a sustainable growth pattern.
