In a rapidly urbanizing global society, solid waste management will be a key challenge facing all the world's cities. This publication provides a fresh perspective and new data on one of the biggest issues in urban development. Using the framework of Integrated Sustainable Waste Management, the report presents unprecedented research from 22 cities across six continents. It describes the rich diversity of waste management systems used throughout the world drawing out the practical lessons for policymakers.

Los principales objetivos del Programa Ciudades Europeas Sostenibles son contribuir a una mayor reflexión sobre la sostenibilidad de las zonas urbanas euopeas, fomentar un amplio intercambio de experiencias, difundir las mejores prácticas a nivel local y, a largo plazo, formular recomendaciones que influyan en la política local, regional de los Estados Miembros y de la UE. El contenido de este informe representa la conclusión de un debate colectivo del grupo de expertos sobre medio ambiente urbano.

Sustainability and Cities examines the urban aspect of sustainability issues, arguing that cities are a necessary focus for that global agenda. The authors make the case that the essential character of a city's land use results from how it manages its transportation, and that only by reducing our automobile dependence will we be able to successfully accomodate all elements of the sustainability agenda.
